What: India inks Rs 5,000 crore deal with US for 145 M777 howitzers.

Where: MCD, New Delhi

  • Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) cleared the deal for 145 American ultra-light howitzers, costing about Rs 5,000 crore.
  • The deal was signed at the two - day meeting of the 15th India - US Military Cooperation Group (MCG) held in New Delhi.
  • Deal finalised via a Government to Government contract.
  • 25 guns to be delivered by mis 2017 and rest of them will be built under Make in India banner.

About M777 Howitzers:
  • M777 is manufactured by BAE Systems, Global Combat Systems Division.
  • M777 howitzwe is a towed 155 mm artillary piece, in service since 2005.
  • United States Marine Corps, United States Army, Indian Army, Canadian Army and Australian Army are the users of M777 howitzers.
