IAF to get 'eye in the sky' to snoop on Pakistani and Chinese Airforce


What: Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEWC) aircraft will be inducted in IAF.

When: 23-Dec-2016

Where: Chitradurga Range at Karnataka.

  • To snoop and detect activities of Pakistani and Chinese Airforce, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) would help in enhancing Indian Air Force capability.

About Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft:
  • It is an airborne radar picket system designed to detect aircraft, ships and vehicles at long ranges and perform command and control of the battleship in an air engagement by directing fighter and attack aircraft strikes.
  • Also used to carryout surveillance, including over ground targets.
  • Frequently perform command and control battle management functions.
  • Modern AEWC systems can detect aircraft from up to 400 km away.
  • One AEWC aircraft flying at 30,000 feet can cover an area of 312000 Sq km .
