Indian Navy to get 12 new Dornier Do 228 surveillance aircraft

What: The Cabinet Committee on Security approves the purchase of 12 locally built Dornier Do 228 Aircraft for the Indian Navy.

  • The Defence Acquisition Council gave Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for the proposal in October 2014.
  • Dornier Do 22 will be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Transport Aircraft Division (TAD), Kanpur.
  • The proposal cost about Rs 2500 Crore.

About Dornier Do 228:
  • It is a twin turboprop STOL utility aircraft.
  • Manufactured by Dornier GmbH RUAG
  • It was introduced in July 1982 and its primary users are Indian Air Force and Indian Coast Guard.
