India - Israel $1.4 Billion Contracts

Who signed the contracts?

The contracts were signed in the presence of Brig. Gen. (Retd) Mishel Ben Baruch, Director, SIBAT, Israel Ministry of Defence and Indian Defence Secretary G Mohan Kumar.

About the contract:

The $1.4 billion contract with Israel Aerospace Industries is for the purchase of two additional Phalcon/IL-76 Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACs) and 10 Heron TP Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAVs).

Airborne Early Warning and Control (AWAC):

  • AWAC system is an airborne radar picket system.
  • Detects aircraft, ships and vehicles at long range.
  • Perform command and control of battlespace.
  • Carry out surveillance, including over ground targets and frequently perform Command and Control, battle management functions similar to an Ait Traffic Controller given Military command over other forces.
Heron UAV:
  • Medium-altitude long-endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle.
  • Manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries.
  • Capable of operations of up to 52 hours duration at up to 10.5 km.
  • Israeli Defence Forces, Indian Air Force, Brazilian Federal Police and Turkish Air Force are the primary users.
