India's second Scorpene class submarine 'INS Khanderi' launched at the Mazagon docks on 12 Jan 2017.
- Before commissioning into the Indian Navy, the submarine will undergo extensive trials at sea and harbour till December to test all its equipments.
- The submarine was launched by the Union Minister of state for Defence Subhash Bhamre's wife Bina Bhamre.
About INS Khanderi:
- INS Khanderi was built at the shipyard of Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) in Mumbai under an agreement with French naval defence firm DCNS.
- The submarine is named after a 17th century Maratha island fort.
- The scorpene include superior stealth and the ability to launch crippling attacks on the enemy using precision - guided weapons.
- The diesel powered submarine can remain submerged for long duration due to the 'air independent propulsion system' technology.
